Characters are awarded experience points for completing mission and defeating enemies. These points can be used to upgrade combat skills in multiple categories. The one big draw-back of the Yakuza 4’s gameplay is that it gets repetitive. The combat is good but, this game suffers from too much of a good thing. 5 was way too long for me, it was like the terrible parts of 4 got worse. The story got more and more convoluted and the mini-games kept distracting me from the main storyline. That was the first Yakuza game, I didn't complete all the side stories/missions in and rushed thru the final story just to get it done. I had serious fatigue after that Yakuza 4 most definitely encourages exploration and whilst you can belt through the game quite quickly (11 or so hours), you will miss most of what makes the game so good and unique. Not to mention not one part of 4's finale managed to come close to rivaling 3's end in terms of gameplay - as 3 has one of the most satisfying long fights in the series (assuming one takes the time to unlock and learn how all of Kiryu's combat works), and some of my favourite end bosses as well (especially the final boss, which stands up there
